OpenStudio Academy

Openstudio Academy of Art and Design, located in beautiful British Columbia, is a private art academy that has been helping high school students develop their portfolios for applications to top art and design universities worldwide since 2009.

This year, we were honored to be invited to NYFW 2025, showcasing a captivating fashion collection by five of our talented high school students. Inspired by their Chinese culture and heritage, this collection is titled "Imprints of Time."

Each student embarked on a unique journey of research and interpretation, translating their chosen theme into stunning original fabric prints.

Amanda Niu - The Shun Collection: Inspired by Chinese calligraphy, this collection features black-and-white garments that mirror the elegance of calligraphic brush strokes and scrolls. It emphasizes minimalism and organic movement, connecting tradition with contemporary fashion.

Cindy Tsai - Oracle Bones: Drawing from the ancient Oracle bone script, this collection uses these characters to craft a narrative around Cindy's Chinese identity. The designs blend historical reverence with modern fashion, making a statement of cultural and individual expression.

Mandy Fu: Based on the mysterious Sanxingdui artifacts, Mandy's designs explore themes of advanced ancient technologies and parallel universes. The collection features garments with geometric shapes and layered textures, representing the archaeological discovery and transformation of copper.

Georgia Li: Inspired by the transformations seen in Chinese ceramics from the five great kilns, Georgia's collection captures the dynamic changes in color and texture during the kiln firing process. It includes prints that mimic crackle patterns and the flow of glaze, represented across different stages of ceramic firing.

Koni Peng: This collection is influenced by traditional Chinese landscape paintings, with designs that incorporate elements of mountains, rivers, and mist using delicate prints on white fabrics. The garments are designed to reflect the natural flow and tranquility of landscape art, emphasizing fluidity and grace.
